The bathroom, no matter how relaxing or luxurious it may be, can still be a dangerous place for children. Wet floors could cause a child to slip and fall. Plugged appliances around the bathroom area could be very harmful, not to mention fatal.
Every room in the house should be carefully childproofed – the kitchen, the bedroom
So what should a parent do to childproof a bathroom? It’s not that hard. Consider the following tips on childproofing a bathroom.
- Younger children should never be inside the bathroom without adult supervision. Make sure to keep the bathroom door closed at all times. Another option is to install a hook-and-eye lock on the outside of the door and that it is high enough not to be reached by the little ones.
- The medicine cabinet should always be out children’s reach. Razors, hair dryers and the like should be kept locked in a drawer or cabinet.
- Appliances such as hair dryer, curling iron and depilator should always be unplugged and put away after each use. Never keep anything plugged near the shower area or the bathtub.
- Buy non-slip mats and place them in the shower area, in the bathtub and on the floor next to the bathtub.
- Get a rubberised guard over the bathtub spout. In case a child would slip and fall, the rubberised guard would lessen the trauma when a child accidentally bumps his head.
- Children should be taught to stay seated in the tub at all times. It’s tricky and it takes time, but they will learn. Just be patient and stay with them all the time.
The most important thing is an adult should always be around when a child uses the bathroom.
See, it’s all in getting the right stuff to ensure that children in the household are safe when using the bathroom. Oh, and don’t forget to keep the bathroom clean at all times – scrub the tiles, use spray disinfectant, clean the tub, the shower area and toilet. Sure, children are protected from slipping and falling, but they should be protected against grime and bacteria. So keep your bathroom sparkly clean and child-safe!
